History
In 1947, after the end of World War II, the United States assumed control of Palau under the auspices of the United Nations . In 1982, Palau signed a free association agreement with the United States. In 1994, Palau gained independence and established diplomatic relations with the United States, at the same time an agreement came into force according to which the United States was responsible for the defense of Palau for 50 years. Palau is a sovereign state and pursues its own foreign policy. The United States and Palau collaborate on a wide range of issues, including: strengthening regional security, promoting sustainable development, addressing climate change and protecting the environment. About 500 Palau natives serve in the U.S. Armed Forces . Palau also provides one of the highest levels of support for United States policy within the United Nations. In 2010, the United States and Palau signed a comprehensive agreement with a wide range of federal programs for a period of 15 years. By the end of 2011, the United States allocated Palau under this agreement $ 147 million.
Bilateral Economic Relations
The United States is making efforts to develop trade and direct investments in Palau, which will help expand and develop a healthy economic partnership. Palau and the United States are members of international organizations such as the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank.
