Leonid Borisovich Shkolnik ( September 29, 1945 , Kemerovo , RSFSR , USSR - June 21, 2019 , Jerusalem , Israel ) - Jewish Soviet poet , journalist and translator . In 1984-1989 he was the editor of the only Yiddish newspaper in the USSR “ Birobidzhaner Stern ” ( Birobidzhan star ). He wrote in Russian and in Yiddish [1] .

Biography
He began his working biography as a worker in a shoe factory. In 1970 he joined the Communist Party. He worked in the Birobidzhaner Stern newspaper from 1974 to 1989, and went from being a correspondent of the department of culture, the head of the department of culture, to the executive secretary and deputy chief editor.
Since 1984 - the chief editor of this newspaper. In Birobidzhan he headed the regional branch of the Union of Journalists of the USSR and the first in the history of the Jewish Autonomous Region Society of Friendship and Cultural Relations with Israel. [2]
In 1989-1991 he was a People’s Deputy of the USSR, a member of the Interregional Deputy Group (MDG), which included deputies A. D. Sakharov , B. Yeltsin , A. Sobchak , G. Starovoitova , Yu. Afanasyev , T. Gdlyan and others. , and a member of the Council of Nationalities of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of the 12th convocation from the Jewish Autonomous Region .
From 1991 to December 1999 he lived in Jerusalem , worked in Tel Aviv as the editor of the daily newspaper "News of the Week" and its literary supplement "Jewish tuning fork".
In 1999, the Forward Association was invited to work in the United States , where until November 2004 he worked as the chief editor of the New York-based Forverts newspaper in Russian. After selling the newspaper to the new owner, he created the Internet newspaper We Are Here in the USA in March 2005 , then returned to Jerusalem and was the owner and editor-in-chief of the independent online publication We Are Here ( USA - Israel ).
He translated Jewish poetry into Russian : Buzi Miller , Dora Khaikin , Luba Wasserman , Zisi Weizman , Emanuel Kazakevich , Itsik Bronfman , Chaim Bader , Moshe Shklyar and others.
