Unlike past World Cups, this one was held in only one city - Toronto . All matches of the tournament were played at the Air Canada Center arena [4] , which is home to the NHL Toronto Maple Leafs club. Air Canada Center has already hosted five matches of the 2004 World Cup , including the final.

Members

The tournament was attended by 8 teams. The North American team consists of players from the USA and Canada not older than 23 years. Players from European countries that are not represented by individual teams at the tournament, such as Germany , Slovakia , Switzerland , Denmark and others, are declared in the European team [5] .

Lineups

Each team consists of 23 players, 3 of whom are goalkeepers. The names of 16 players (including at least two goalkeepers) were announced on March 2, 2016 [7] , and the final rosters on May 27, 2016. [eight]

Tournament Rules

Teams are divided into two groups, in which they hold three matches. In the playoffs, two teams from each group who score the most points go out. Group winners play semifinal matches with teams taking second place in another group. The winners of the semifinals meet in the final mini-series to two victories. [9]

If the score is equal, according to the results of the main time of the match, overtimes in the “3 by 3” format lasting five minutes are held at the group stage, in the event of a tie, a series of shootouts is assigned . In the playoffs, an unlimited number of overtimes in the “5 by 5” format is held, lasting 20 minutes before the first goal scored. [ten]

For winning the match, the team receives 2 points. The team that loses in regular time does not receive points, and the team receives 1 point for losing in extra time or in the shoot-out series. With an equal number of points scored, a higher place in the group belongs to the team that won in the full-time meeting. When points are equal for more than two teams, the following indicators are taken into account: the number of wins in regular and extra time (not taking into account victories in shootouts), wins only in regular time, the total difference between the goals scored and the goals conceded, and the total number of goals scored. [eleven]

Prize Fund

Each team receives $ 500 thousand for participating in the World Cup. The winner of the tournament receives $ 1 million, and the finalist - $ 500 thousand. Also, each team receives profit from broadcasting exhibition matches on the eve of the World Cup, where it was nominally the hostess of the site. [12]

Test matches

In preparation for the tournament, the teams held training camps from September 5 to 7, as well as three control matches from September 8 to 14. [13] [14]
