Biography
At the end of the Paris Normal School, he became a member of the French School in Athens and decided to devote his life to archeology. He managed to realize this desire only after the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871, during which he was in the administrative service. In September 1871, he resumed his scientific work and published in Bulletin de correspondance hellénique the results of his research on discovered samples of Athenian ceramics. Then Raye began to intensively collect monuments for both the Louvre and for himself. His extensive collection was subsequently gradually sold by himself. He was the first (along with Saburov) to pay attention to the Tanagra figurines, which later became famous and caused extensive falsifications.
In 1872–1873, Rayth made Rothschilds with the help of the architect Albert Tom and excavated at Miletus, the results of which were transferred by the Rothschilds to the Louvre Museum . Returning to Paris, from 1874 he received the position of an associate in archeology at the National Library, then he soon became a specialist in Greek epigraphy and assistant director of École des Hautes Études and later a lecturer in Collège de France. Since 1884 he was a professor of archeology at the National Library. By this time, Rayje had great scientific prestige and began publishing a series of articles on ancient Greek monuments in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts. Early death interrupted his career, many of his works remained in manuscripts or were incomplete, but some were published or completed by his colleagues.
The main works of his authorship: “Monuments de l'art antique” (II, 1884 onwards, with tables, in collaboration with Maspero, Marche, Collignon and others) and “Histoire de la céramique grecque” (Paris, 1888; completed by Collignon ) A collection of articles by Rayet was published by S. Reinard under the title Études d'archéologie et d'art (Paris, 1888).
