He graduated from high normal school, in 1849 received a doctorate in linguistics. Subsequently, he received the title of professor of history at the Lyceum of Versailles, and also taught the title of professor of literature in a number of provincial educational institutions, including Grenoble and Montpellier. He collaborated with a number of scientific publications, including Revue historique de droit français, étranger and others for which he wrote scientific articles.

The main works of his authorship: “De l'arianisme” (Paris, 1850), “Etude sur l'histoire du colonat chez les Romains” (Paris, 1856), “Sur l'occupation de Grenoble au X siècle” (1860), Les familles politiques d'Athènes et les gentes de Rome (Paris, 1862), Le clergé chrétien dans les campagnes (Paris, 1864), La prose française avant le XVII siècle (1864), Les questeurs urbains "(1865)," Les lettres, les idées et les moeurs pendant la première moitié du XVIII siècle "(Paris, 1865)," La littérature da moyen âge et le romantisme "(Paris, 1870).
