Biography
He was self-taught. The beginning of his independent life was stormy: he consistently worked as an assistant clerk at a law office, a glazier’s student, a bookstore cashier, a lithographer’s student, and then entered military service, which, however, resigned when he had the opportunity to get a job as a designer postcards. In 1850, he came to Paris to defend his cousin Nadar, and this defense opened him the way to work and his own column of drawings in the satirical newspaper Journal pour rire, headed by Filippon. The newspaper had a republican focus, and Randon, himself a Republican, was actively engaged in drawing anti-monarchist cartoons. His political satires were very popular, and he could be in prison on the eve of the regime of the Second Empire, but after a coup d'état, Louis Napoleon decided to choose a less dangerous field of creativity and turned to a military caricature that brought income and quick success.
In total, he worked as a caricaturist for almost 30 years; He published his works not only in the “Journal pour rire”, but also in the “Journal amusant” and other publications. In France at the end of the 19th century, many of his works were assessed as too rigid with respect to the grotesque depicted in them and not very well executed from an artistic point of view, but the French critics themselves justified the latter with the use of original drawings and technical imperfection of their copying technique - zincography. In Russia, on the contrary, his works were evaluated as “funny, full of life pictures”. In addition to military life and political cartoons, Randon portrayed the lives of ordinary people of France of his time. Part of his caricatures was released in the form of albums, which at the end of the 19th century became very rare and were sought by collectors.
