Rappen (rapp) ( German rappen, rapen ) - originally a type of pfennig of dark color, minted in the XIV century in the Upper Rhine. In the future, the Upper Rhine Pfennigi, issued by the Rappen Monetary Union founded in 1403, were called rappens . Rappen Union was equal to the two Pfennig [1] [2] .
In Switzerland, rappens were minted by various cantons until the middle of the 19th century. So, for example, 100 rappens were equal to Aargau franc , Basel franc , Bernese franc , etc. In French-speaking cantons, similar coins were called “rapp” ( French rappe, rapp ). 100 rapps was equal, for example, franc Vaud .
With the introduction of the common currency ( Swiss franc ), which replaced the currencies of the cantons, “rappen” is the name of the exchange unit ( 1 ⁄ 100 francs) in German. In Romansh, the same unit is called rap , in French it is centime, and in Italian it is centesimo . Moreover, on coins in rappens, the denomination is indicated only in numbers, without indicating the name of the currency unit.
Coins of 5, 10 and 20 rappen are currently in circulation in Switzerland. Coins of 1 rappen were withdrawn from circulation on January 1, 2007, 2 rappen coins - on January 1, 1978.
