Rhododendron Vazeya [2] ( lat. Rhododēndron vasēyi ) - plant , deciduous shrub; species of rhododendron genus. It is used as an ornamental garden plant, as well as in breeding programs for the production of decorative rhododendron varieties . The specific Latin name is given in honor of the American botanist George Vosy and his son GR Vasey , who discovered the plant in 1878 [3] [4] .

Description
Deciduous shrub, height 2.5-5.5 m. Crown shirokoraskidistaya. The bark is smooth with vertical grooves. Young shoots slightly pubescent, reddish-brown, later the pubescence disappears, in the second year grayish-brown.
Leaves 2.3–17 × 0.8–5.5 cm, elliptical or oblong-elliptical, pointed, with a wedge-shaped base, slightly wavy on the edge, ciliate, dark green above, lighter below, bare on both sides, scarlet in autumn. Petioles 3-10 mm long.
Inflorescence bears 5-15 flowers. Pedicels 5-26 mm.
Flowers open before the appearance of leaves, fragrant. The corolla is 3-5 cm long, slightly bilabiate, from pale to dark pink, sometimes white, with orange-brown or red spots on the upper lobes, widely bell-shaped. The cup is small. Stamens (5) 7, length not identical 12–38 mm, threads bare. Pinkish anthers . Ovary is glandular. The bar is bare, longer than the stamens.

In culture since 1880. One of the most highly decorative deciduous rhododendrons.
In the climatic conditions of Latvia, the height at the age of 20 is about 2.5 m [2] . Annual growth of 5-6 cm. Lives over 30 years. Light-requiring Prefers slightly acidic, gravelly, moist soil. It is winter-hardy in central Russia . Planted in groups on the lawn, on the edge of light-coniferous forests, together with late-flowering and evergreen rhododendrons.
In GBS since 1964. Height 0.7 m, crown diameter 60 cm. It blooms from 30 years old, annually and always abundantly, from 21.V ± 3 to 6.VI ± 3 for 17 days. The fruits ripen in September. Winter hardiness I (II). Approximately 27% of rooted cuttings in the processing of root stimulants.
Seeds are stored in paper bags or tightly sealed glass jars in a dry, unheated room. At the same time, germination lasts up to 3 years. Germination 84-87%. Seeds do not need stratification . Sowing is carried out in December-February in greenhouse conditions at 18 - 20 ° C without incorporation into the soil [6] .
Under the conditions of the Nizhny Novgorod region, winter hardy . In harsh winters freeze slightly the ends of shoots. Seeds ripen [7] .
According to the American Rhododendron Society, it can withstand winter temperatures as low as -26 ° C [8] .
