Biography

Gustav Pfitser was born into a lawyer's family. He graduated from the Stuttgart gymnasium, then entered the theological seminary in Blaubeuren. From 1825 to 1830 he studied theology and philosophy at the University of Tübingen , after graduating from the university he worked as a tutor in the same city, from 1846 he became a professor of literature at the local gymnasium and worked until 1872. In 1849 he was elected to the Württemberg Parliament.

The first collection of his poems was published in 1831, the second - in 1835. Then he wrote Martin Luthers Leben (Stuttgart, 1836), Dichtungen epischer und episch-lyrischer Gattung (ibid., 1840; his great poem Die Tatarenschlacht was also placed there), poem Der Welsche und der Deutsche Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini und Georg von Heimburg "(ib., 1844)," Geschichte Alexanders des Gr. für die Jugend ”(ib., 1846),“ Geschichte der Griechen für die reifere Jugend ”(ib., 1847),“ Uhland und Rücken ”(Stuttgart, 1837).

Hein took revenge on him in his Schwabenspiegel for analyzing Heine's writings placed by Pfitser in Deutsche Viertelsjahrsschrift. Pfitser was distinguished from other poets of the Swabian school mainly by the reflective nature of his works. Politically, he adhered to the views of his brother. He printed anonymously “Rätsel aus dem Deutschen Reich” (Berlin, 1876). Since 1838 he was editor of Morgenblatt.

From 1835 to 1839, he translated many works of George Gordon Byorn into German , in the 1840s he translated James Fenimore Cooper and then Edward Bulver-Lytton.
