Biography

From 1832 he studied classical philology and oriental studies at the University of Erlangen , later he also studied German studies at the University of Gottingen . In 1839 he received his doctorate in Erlangen and was rehabilitated in the same institution a year later. After that, he began to teach at this university - first in the rank of privat-docent , from 1846 an extraordinary and from 1852 an ordinary professor of German language and literature. In the 1858/1859 and 1866/1867 academic years he was elected vice-rector of the university. In 1855 he took part in the reform of the spelling of the German language and in 1875 received an award from the German government for his work in this direction. As a philologist, he was a supporter of the so-called moderate phonetic trend in terms of reforming German spelling.

Main works: “Die Aspiration u. die Lautverschiebung "(Lp., 1837)," Die Einwirkung des Christenthums auf die althochdeutsche Sprache "(1845)," Vom deutschen Geiste "(1848)," Ueber deutsche Rechtschreibung "(1855)," Der Unterricht im 182 ), Deutsche Versuche (1861), Gesammelte sprachwissenschaftliche Schriften (1863), Geschichte der germanischen Philologie (1870).

In the “Language Learning Letters Collection”, an article by von Raumer “Die Urverwandschaft der semitischen und indoeuropaeischen Sprachen” was published, which dealt with the relationship between Semitic and Indo-European language families, which caused a number of notes and objections from various German scholars. To defend his findings, Raumer spoke in six successive pamphlets published by him, a review of which in A.A. Khovansky 's Philological Notes was an article by N. N. Dobrov, Rudolf von Raumer. The Jewish Question in Comparative Linguistics in the West, "where it was argued that without knowledge of the Jewish language neither comparative linguistics nor the correct classical school can have proper success.
