Life
According to legend, Tammaro was a bishop in North Africa. Exiled by the vandals , he arrived in Campania , where, presumably, he became bishop of Atella or Benevento in the second half of the fifth century .
According to Vita sancti Castrensis , St. Tammaro, along with the rest of the twelve bishops of North Africa, was persecuted by vandals between 439 and 440 years . In order to erase the memory of the holy men, they were placed in a boat << without a helm and sails >> and sent to the sea. Vita S. Castrensis describes in detail how the bishops were put in a boat, and their names are given: the oldest of all, Rosio, the noble Second (Secondino), then Heraclius (Eraclio), Venign (Benigno), Prisc (Prisco), Elpidius (Elpidio), Mark, Augustus, Canyon (Canione) and Vindonio (Vindonio). St. Castresius (Castrese) was for the elder and stayed aft, while St. Tammaro remained on the nose [2] . Guarded by a holy angel, the boat safely crossed the Mediterranean Sea and arrived in Volturno , from where St. the bishops dispersed throughout the Campaign, preaching the word of God.
