History

Volleyball in Nicaragua appeared in the 2nd half of the 1960s in the cities of the country's Atlantic coast. The National Volleyball Federation was founded in 1970 , but joined the FIVB and NORCECA only 10 years later - in 1980 .

Nicaragua’s women's team first appeared in the international arena in 1970 when it took part in the Central American and Caribbean Games . The debut was unsuccessful - 10 defeats in 10 matches and not a single set won, moreover, in the opening match against the Cuban team, the Nicaraguan volleyball players lost all three games with the same score 0:15. In the next 17 years, the Nicaraguan team was limited to participating in the Central American Cup , in the Central American Games and only once (in 1982 ) again performed at the games of the countries of Central America and the Caribbean.

In 1987, Nicaragua volleyball player for the first and so far last time participated in the NORCECA Championship , which was held in the capital of Cuba, Havana . The opening match against the cubes went like a carbon copy of their duel 17 years ago - a 0-3 defeat and again not a single game point scored. In the remaining five matches of the tournament, the Nicaraguan team also lost, and with a crushing score in the games against the teams of Canada , the USA , Puerto Rico and Mexico , and only in the game against the team of the US Virgin Islands managed to impose a serious fight on the rivals, losing only in five sets.

Since 2006, the Nicaraguan team regularly takes part in qualifying tournaments of the world championships , but only in 2014 was the closest to getting into the world championship. In the 3rd round of continental qualification in their group, Nicaraguan volleyball players only lost in the final to the Dominican Republic national team , and in the additional stage of selection they took 4th place out of 5 teams, ahead of Panama and losing to the teams of Mexico , Trinidad and Tobago and Costa Rica .

If the Nicaraguan national team is declared only occasionally in continental competitions, then it regularly participates in the Central American Cup draws and is the 14-time prize-winner of this tournament, in which the national teams of the member countries of the Association of Volleyball Federations of Central America (FECAVOL), an integral part of the Confederation of North, Central Volleyball America and the Caribbean (NORCECA) . At the same time, in the 2014 draw held in Guatemala , the Nicaraguan volleyball players nearly moved the champion, the Costa Rica national team, from the champion position for the past 21 years. In the first match of the competition, the Nicaraguan team led the score 2: 1 after three games played against the Costa Ricans, but still did not hold the victory and as a result, defeating all other rivals, won silver medals for the second tournament in a row.

In addition, the Nicaraguan team participated in all 10 volleyball tournaments of the Central American Games , winning medals 7 times.

In 2016, the Central American Cup was held in November-December in the capital of Nicaragua, Managua, as part of the zonal round of the qualifying tournament of the World Cup 2018 . The host team won a landslide victory, giving only one game to their rivals in 4 matches (the strongest team in the region - the Costa Rican team - did not participate in the tournament, because by rating they already had a ticket to the North American qualification finals). The two best teams of the draw - Nicaragua and Guatemala - qualified for the final stage of the North American qualification for the World Cup, but they took third places in their groups and did not get into the world championship.
