It originates in the De Long mountains (the western edge of the Brooks Range ) at the confluence of the Kogruk and Tupik streams; flows mainly in the north, northeast and northwest directions. It flows into the Kasegaluk lagoon, separated from the Chukchi Sea by a group of barrier islands. The mouth of the river is 32 km southwest of Cape Ice Cape [1] . The length of the Utukok River is 362 km [2] .
The word Utoqaq means "old" or "ancient" and is the Inuit name for Cape Ice Cape. The name of the river was first mentioned by the Russian naval officer Lavrenty Alekseevich Zagoskin in 1847. In a 1899 report by the US National Surveying Service, the name of the river is referred to as the “Ootokok River” [1] .
