Biography
He graduated from the University of Leipzig (1907), improved at universities in Heidelberg and Manchester . In 1911-1917 he taught at the Higher Technical School in Karlsruhe; Professor of Munich (1917-1935), University of Michigan (1936-1957).
Major works
Faience simultaneously with F. Soddy established ( 1913 ) the displacement rule during the decay of radioactive elements (see Radioactivity ), discovered the radioactive isotopes 234m Pa (UX2) and 215 Po (AcA), double decay 214 Bi (RaC); together with F. Panet formulated ( 1913 ) the rule of coprecipitation of radioactive elements (the Faience – Panet rule ). Faience's main works in the field of physical chemistry are devoted to refractometric studies , studying the relationship between the deformation of electron shells and the chemical and optical properties of inorganic compounds, studying undissociated molecules and complex ions in solutions of strong electrolytes , and the adsorption of ions and coloring materials on salt-like compounds. Foreign Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (since 1924 ).
