Hydrosulfites

Hydrosulfites , bisulfites - acid salts of sulfuric acid H 2 SO 3 , for example, potassium hydrosulfite KHSO 3 .

Properties

In contrast to most medium salts of H 2 SO 3 — sulfites , all hydrosulfites are highly soluble in water. In solutions, hydrosulfites are gradually oxidized by atmospheric oxygen to sulfuric acid salts :

2KHSO3+O2→K2SOfour+H2O{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {2KHSO_ {3} + O_ {2} \ rightarrow K_ {2} SO_ {4} + H_ {2} O}}}

When heated, sodium or potassium hydrosulfites form pyrosulfites, which are also called metabisulfites:

2KHSO3→K2S2O5+H2O{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {2KHSO_ {3} \ rightarrow K_ {2} S_ {2} O_ {5} + H_ {2} O}}}

Getting

Hydrosulfites are produced by the reaction:

K2CO3+2SO2+H2O→2KHSO3+CO2{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {K_ {2} CO_ {3} + 2SO_ {2} + H_ {2} O \ rightarrow 2KHSO_ {3} + CO_ {2}}}}

Application

Sodium hydrosulfite NaHSO 3 is used in photography and for bleaching various materials; Calcium hydrosulfite Ca (HSO 3 ) 2 is used in the production of wood pulp .

Bisulfites are added to the drug epinephrine to prevent its inactivation through oxidation to adrenochrome .

In molecular biology, the bisulfite modification of cytosine followed by sequencing is used to identify unmethylated nucleotides in the DNA structure ( bisulfite sequencing ).
