He graduated from high school in Klatovy , then Charles University . In 1927-1952 worked as a school teacher in Pilsen . Then in 1952-1973. taught in the same city at the Pedagogical Institute (now West Bohemian University ), since 1963, head of the Department of Physics. Doctor of Natural History (1968) and Musicology (1971), investigated various issues of musical acoustics. The author of about 150 scientific works, including some works on the history of music; among other things, published the textbook “Acoustic Basics of Orchestration” ( German: Akustische Grundlagen des Orchestrierens ; 1971, co-authored with Yarmil Burghauser ).

As an amateur musician and musicologist, Spelda also stood at the origins of the Pilsen Radio Symphony Orchestra (1946). Published a total of about 10,000 critical articles about music, reviews.
