Story
Julia and Werner Kreutsy, a middle-income childless couple, live in West Berlin . At the age of 19, Julia gave birth to a child, whom eight days later she gave for raising to another family. Boy Carlo was brought up for six years in the family of Kostrovitsa, a Polish rolling mill worker in Oberhausen . Suddenly, Julia recalls the abandoned child and is looking for him. She monitors her son on the way to school, brings him presents and tries to establish contact with foster parents. Julia Werner's husband keeps her from these trips to Oberhausen several times, stops her at the station, locks her in the apartment, but all this does not give any result. Their marriage is bursting at the seams.
By law, Julia has every right to regain her child, since the adoption of Carlo was not framed in the proper manner. Kostrovits stubbornly disagrees with these facts. One day, Julia takes Carlo from the pool to her home in Berlin. Enraged Kostrovits bursts into the apartment of Kreutsev and takes away his adopted son. Upon returning to Oberhausen, the adoptive father finds himself in the police, and the child is returned to the Kreuts. Kostrovitz realizes the hopelessness of his situation and climbs onto the high-rise factory chimney, from where he declares that he will jump from it if the child is not returned to him before six in the morning of the next day. The action of the desperate father is in the center of public attention, which is on the side of Kostrovitsa. Julia desperately resists the pressure exerted on her. In the end, even her husband turns away from Julia. The decision to return the child is given to Julia very difficult.
