Initially, the resource was the site of the NTV television company and was located at ntv.ru ^{[2] [4]} .

In its current form, it has existed since August 28, 2000 , when a new version of the NTV website was opened ^[5] , in which the emphasis was shifted from covering the activities of the channel to the publication of news. Such a change in format was due to the fact that the NTV information service at that time was one of the best in the country (their slogan of those years is known as “News is our profession”), in addition, it produced more materials than it could broadcast. The rest, along with the main subjects, began to be placed on the new version of ntv.ru - both the text of the news and the video reports of the correspondents of the television company.

The site was opened ahead of schedule in connection with the fire on the Ostankino TV tower that happened the previous evening, which led to the almost complete shutdown of television and radio broadcasting in the Moscow region and the emergence of information hunger among the population. By this time, the development of a new resource was almost completed, and the editorial staffed and from August 1 ^[6] (that is, almost a month) worked in a closed test mode (the initial launch of the site for ordinary readers was scheduled for September 4 of the same year). Thanks to this, the resource has accumulated a small archive of materials and gained experience in covering resonant tragic events that took place in August 2000 .

In April 2001, the television channel became a part of Gazprom-Media OJSC, but the site was not legally a division of the television company, therefore, it remained in the sphere of influence of the previous NTV owner Vladimir Gusinsky ^[7] . At the same time, information and videos from TNT and TV-6 channels began to be published on the site, where a number of NTV employees moved ^[8] . The resource got the name and domain of NTVru.com, but continued to work at the previous address (ntv.ru).

In October 2002, the site changed its domain name to newsru.com ^{[7] [9]} , and the original ntv.ru domain was transferred to the television company on November 13, 2002 by mutual agreement ^[10] . The site server newsru.com is located in the United States ^[11] .

In July 2016, 16 years after the advent of NEWSru.com, the site updated its design ^[12] .

In March 2017, the Ukrainian version of the publication, located at newsru.com.ua, was closed. According to the project’s editor-in-chief, Olga Len, the publication was subsidized for all 10 years of its existence, and because of the unhealthy advertising market in Ukraine, it could not reach self-sufficiency. According to former employees of the online publication, the main reason for the closure of the site by the owner, whose business is concentrated mainly in Russia, was the clearly pro-Ukrainian position of the publication on the conflict in the Donbass ^[1] .

The joint edition of NEWSru.com is located in Moscow and has two foreign representative offices. In December 2005, the Israeli editorial staff began to work (newsru.co.il) ^[1] . From April 2007 to March 2017, the Ukrainian edition worked (newsru.ua; LLC New Media Internet Ukraine) ^[1] .

The main site is presented in several additional versions: text (txt.newsru.com), mobile (m.newsru.com), PDA (palm.newsru.com), for the visually impaired (big.newsru.com). There is also an RSS feed.
