History
The history of the USSR championships dates back to April 4, 1933 . On this day in the Palace of Metalworkers of Dnepropetrovsk the first matches were held among the national teams of five cities. These competitions, as well as the next three similar championships, were officially called All-Union Volleyball Holidays.
USSR championships among club teams representing various voluntary sports societies and departments have been held since 1938 . In 1956 , 1959 , 1963 and 1967 , the title of champion of the USSR was played in the program of summer Spartakiads of the peoples of the USSR . In 1937 , 1941 - 1944 and 1964, competitions of the USSR championship were not held.
In the season 1991/92, the USSR Volleyball Federation organized the CIS Open Championship; a number of its participants in 1992 simultaneously played the first Russian championship .

Members
In the first two decades, the formula and number of participants in the USSR championships changed almost annually. For example, in the seasons of 1933-1936, teams of cities took part in the tournament, and in the seasons of 1952 and 1953 , along with the strongest club teams of the RSFSR and the Ukrainian SSR , teams of all other Soviet republics took part in the championship. Relative stability came only in 1954 , when classes "A" and "B" were organized and an annual exchange between them was provided.
Since 1966 , class “B” was abolished, and in class “A” the 1st and 2nd groups were formed (since 1972 they were renamed the Premier League and the 1st group of class “A”). Since 1977 , the 1st group became known as the 1st league.
