44th Fighter Aviation Division

The 44th Fighter Aviation Division ( 44th IAD ) is an aviation military unit of fighter aircraft of the USSR Armed Forces in the Great Patriotic War .

Division History

The 44th Fighter Aviation Division was formed on July 25, 1940 on the basis of the Decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR [1] . With the outbreak of war, she took part in hostilities in the Air Force of the Southwestern Front . Since August 25, 1941, it became part of the Air Force of the 6th Army of the Southern Front . On November 1, 1941, the division included bomber aviation regiments, and it received the name 44th Mixed Aviation Division . Subsequently, it was again renamed the 44th Fighter Aviation Division. On February 18, 1942, the 44th Fighter Aviation Division turned to the formation of the 6th Army Air Force .
