Geography
Biscayne Bay is part of the U.S. Canal . Its length is 88 kilometers, width - 15 kilometers. The total area exceeds 1110 km². To the north, the gulf stretches to North Miami, in the south reaches the end of the island of North Key Largo . In this area, the bay is connected by numerous shallow channels to the Florida Bay ( Florida Bay ). In its southern part, Biscayne Bay consists of a number of small bays - Card Sound, Barnes Sound and Manate Bay. The first two are connected by the Card Sound Bridge . A significant part of the bay - mainly the southern one - has been part of Biscayne National Park since 1980 and has been declared a conservation zone. In the east of the bay, the islands of Miami Beach , Key Biscayne , Iceland and North Key Largo form a natural border with the Atlantic Ocean.
History
It was first investigated by the Spanish navigator Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513. In 1565 he was visited by Pedro Menendez de Aviles , who gave the bay the name "Tequesta". On one of the maps of the XVII century it was designated as Cayo de Biscainhos , which, apparently, became the basis for the current name. In the 19th century, the bay was originally called Key Biscayne Bay , then - Biscayne Bay .
In the 1920s, especially after 1926, when there was a sharp rise in the price of real estate in the state of Florida, the Gulf region received significant economic development, and the number of local residents increased significantly. In 1947, the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science was created here on the island of Virginia Cay , the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science , in 1977 the Biscayne Bay Campus of the International University of Florida .
Infrastructure
Residential quarters and farm buildings are located mainly in the northern part of the bay, these are the northeastern parts of the metropolitan area of Greater Miami. Here is also the port of Miami , one of the largest in the world. Numerous bridges and tunnels have been laid across the Biscayne waterway, connecting motorways to the islands and various areas of Greater Miami between them (Florida State Road 922, Florida State Road 934, Port of Miami Tunnel, Interstate 195, etc.).
