The enterprise was founded in 1957 on the basis of the M.P. Chumakov Institute of Poliomyelitis and Viral Encephalitis of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in order to develop a technology for the production of polio vaccines and to provide mass vaccination of the population of the USSR and other countries with this drug. The founder and first director of the enterprise is Mikhail Petrovich Chumakov . ^[3]

The company is the only Russian manufacturer of live and the only Russian supplier of WHO and UNICEF . ^{[4] [5]}

Since the mid 90-ies of the 20th century "PIPVE them. M.P. Chumakova "is developing drugs for the treatment of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome . A vaccine developed on the basis of a substrate of the brain tissue of Syrian hamsters has shown comparative efficacy in the treatment of Puumala and Hantaan viruses ^[6] . Nevertheless, the results of the action of cerebral vaccines compared with cultural ones were found to be unsatisfactory according to modern requirements introduced by people, after which the studies were stopped. The Institute also developed an aerosol DNA vaccine against HFRS, however, the low immunogenicity of the drug was shown. ^[7]

The company's products are distributed for the prevention of poliomyelitis in Europe, Africa and Southeast Asia. Vaccines produced at the facility were used in the US polio eradication program. ^[8] In 2014, the company delivered over 1.3 million doses of polio vaccine to the CIS countries. Of these, 20 thousand doses were delivered to Uzbekistan, 25 thousand - to Azerbaijan, 384 thousand - to Belarus, and more than 434 thousand - to Kazakhstan. ^[9]

Since 2005, FSUE PIPVE named after M.P. Chumakova "is the official Russian supplier of vaccines against yellow fever. ^[10] The vaccine produced at the facility has also received UN approval. ^[11] 8,116,900 doses were delivered for export through UNICEF to 11 countries in Africa and Asia in 2013, and in 2014, more than 14 million doses of the vaccine. ^[12] . Currently, 40% of the global supply of yellow fever vaccine is provided by PIPVE named after M.P. Chumakova. ^[13] .

According to 2012, FSUE PIPVE named after MP Chumakova ”is a leader among Russian pharmaceutical companies in the commercial sector for the production of vaccines, with a market share of more than 10%. ^[14] The company's drugs occupy up to 80% of the Russian market in their segments. ^[15] In 2014, the supply of oral polio vaccine for the domestic needs of the Russian Federation amounted to more than 11.3 million doses ^[16] .

The enterprise together with the Institute of Poliomyelitis and Viral Encephalitis named after M.P. Chumakova is developing the first inactivated vaccine (IPV) in Russia. ^[17] According to the decree of the Government of the Russian Federation, inactivated polio vaccine is a strategically significant drug, the production of which should be located in Russia. ^[18] In February 2015, the company developed the first vaccine samples. The start of the use of domestic IPV for vaccination of the population is scheduled for 2017. ^{[19] [20]}

As part of the import substitution program, the company produces the first tick- borne encephalitis vaccine Klesch-E-Vak in Russia, designed for children from 1 year to 16 years old and protecting against all currently known virus subtypes. ^[21]

In July 2017, plans were approved for the construction of three new buildings with a total area of ​​about 82.4 thousand square meters that are designed to house research laboratories, pharmaceutical production, a warehouse and a garage. ^[22]
