Smith Stanley, Edward 13th Earl of Derby

Edward Smith-Stanley , 13th Earl of Derby ( April 21, 1775 - June 30, 1851 ; in 1776-1832 his title was recorded as Lord Stanley , in 1832-1834 as The Lord Stanley ) - British politician, naturalist, landowner and collector. A Chinese ringed parrot is named after him. Colonel of the British Army (October 2, 1798).

He was the first child and only son of Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby, and Elizabeth Hamilton, daughter of James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton. June 30, 1798 married Charlotte Margaret Hornby, daughter of the Rev. Jeffrey Hornby, married to the future Prime Minister Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby.

He was educated at Eton and Trinity College Cambridge, graduating from the latter in 1795 with a master's degree in art. June 11, 1796 became a member of parliament from Preston (Lancashire County) from the Whig Party; He occupied the chair from 1796 to 1832, on December 22, 1831 received the title of Baron Stanley-Bikerstaff, in 1801, 1802 and 1806 he was re-elected without competitors, in 1807 and 1812 he defeated his competitors from the Tories and then was re-elected without rivals until 1832. In December 1831 he became a deputy of the House of Lords.

On October 21, 1834, he succeeded his father as the 13th Earl of Derby (and at the same time chancellor of the Duchy of Lancashire) and moved away from politics, taking up the device of the natural science collection at Noose Hall near Liverpool. He had a large collection of live animals: at the time of his death in Nooseley, there were 1,272 birds and 345 mammals brought to England by researchers such as Joseph Burke. Since 1831 he was chairman of the London Zoological Society, was engaged in the study of birds. He was also the patron saint of the writer Edward Lear. Many of the exhibits in the Derby collections are currently on display at the Liverpool Museum. From 1828 to 1833 he was president of the Linnaeus Society.
