Temnothorax mpala (lat.) Is a species of small sized ants of the genus Temnothorax of the Formicoxenini tribe from the subfamily Myrmicinae of the family Formicidae [1] .

Description

Small yellowish-brown ants (2-3 mm). The scape is short (does not reach the occipital edge of the head), the methanotal groove is absent. Complicated eyes are relatively large. The head is longer than its width (CI 72.8–75.9) with parallel sides. Head length (HL) 0.59-0.67 mm; head width (HW) 0.44–0.48 mm; antenna length (SL) 0.43–0.46 mm. Clypeus and abdomen smooth and shiny. Propedeal spines of medium length. Antennae of workers and females 12-segmented (in males 13-segmented). Small families live in nests located in litter and tree remains [1] .

Systematics

View Temnothorax mpala was first described in 2015 by Matthew Prebus (University of California, Davis, Davis, California , USA ). Included together with the Temnothorax brevidentis , Temnothorax megalops and Temnothorax rufus species in the species group Temnothorax laurae species group. The species name is given by the name of the antelope mpala (in the language of the Bantu tribe, which their leader contained) and the place of detection at the Mpala Research Center ( Kenya ) [1] .
