Sir Martin Polyakoff ( born Martyn Poliakoff ; born 1947 ) is a British chemist . Member (and vice president) of the Royal Society of London , professor of chemistry at the University of Nottingham .

Biography

Born December 16, 1947 in a Jewish family. The son of the inventor and president of Multitone Electronics, Alexander Iosifovich Polyakova (1910-1996) [2] , the grandson of radio engineer and inventor of the first hearing aids, Joseph Lazarevich Polyakov . Mother - Aina Samuel ( born Ina Miriam Samuel (Montagu) , 1913-1992) - came from a British Jewish aristocratic family [3] . Parents got married in 1937 . Stephen Polyakoff's brother.

He studied at Westminster School, and then at Royal College of Cambridge , receiving a bachelor 's degree in 1969 and a doctorate in 1973. During his training at Cambridge, Polyakoff was friends with Tony Judt , who later became a famous historian and writer.

Since 1972, Polyakoff worked at the University of Newcastle (at Newcastle upon Tyne ), and since 1979, at the University of Nottingham, becoming a professor here in 1991.

Martin Polyakoff is widely known as a participant in the popular science project The Periodic Table of Videos, produced by Brady Haran, designed to familiarize the public with all 118 elements of the periodic table.

Martin is married and has two children - Ellen Polyakova [4] and Simon Polyakov. The sisters are Lucinda Jane Poliakoff (born 1957), surgeon [5] , and Miranda Ann Poliakoff (born 1959), art historian, director of the South Eastern Museums Service (since 1994).

Merit

  • He was awarded the Meldola Medal and Prize of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 1976. [6]
  • He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2008 (commander) and awarded the title of Knight-Bachelor in 2015. [7]
