Biography

Born in Vyatka on June 22, 1921 . Mother died early, the boy was raised by his father, who died in 1940, and then lived with the support of local historian Alexander Dmitrievich Fokin . After graduating from school in 1939, Cherepanov entered the Faculty of Biology of Leningrad State University .

He was drafted into the army, participated in the Soviet-Finnish and World War II, where he was the commander of the rifle division, then led the field radio station. Sergey Kirillovich was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War , the Order of the Red Star and medals.

In 1946 he again entered the Leningrad State University. In 1950, Sergei Kirillovich took part in the expedition of the Botanical Institute (BIN) to the Kaliningrad region , conducted by E. G. Pobedimova . After graduating from Leningrad State University in 1951, Cherepanov became a graduate student at BIN. The candidate dissertation - “Monograph of the alder genus” - was defended by Cherepanov in 1954 under the guidance of Professor Sergei Vasilyevich Yuzepchuk . Also, since 1954 he worked as a junior researcher at BIN, since 1960 he was a senior researcher.

In 1955, Cherepanov traveled to Northern Kazakhstan , in 1956 to South Transcaucasia , in 1957 to Daralagez and the Nakhichevan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic , and in 1958 to Armenia and Georgia . In 1964, he led the BIN botanical expedition to Dagestan , and in 1978 traveled to the lower reaches of the Amur River .

S.K. Cherepanov was the author of the treatments for several large genera of the Compositae family (in particular, Cornflower and Skird ) for the fundamental monograph Flora of the USSR . He took part in writing "Flora of Turkmenistan", "Arctic Flora of the USSR", "Flora of the European part of the USSR", "Vascular Plants of the Soviet Far East", "Plant Resources of the USSR", as well as " Great Soviet Encyclopedia ". He was one of the members of the team involved in the preparation of the XII International Botanical Congress in Leningrad (1975).

Sergey Kirillovich was awarded the medal “25th anniversary of the International Association of Plant Taxonomy ” in 1975. Also in 1975, he defended as a doctoral dissertation published in 1973, “Code of amendments and changes to the Flora of the USSR.” In 1977, this work was awarded the Prize named after V. L. Komarov .

In 1980-1983, Sergei Kirillovich worked in the editorial office of the Botanical Journal . Since 1986, S.K. Cherepanov worked as the chief scientific associate of the Herbarium of Higher Plants department.

In 1981, the fundamental report “Vascular Plants of the USSR", prepared by Cherepanov, was published. In 1995 - the second edition in English and Russian.

February 10, 1995 Sergei Kirillovich Cherepanov died.
