Biography
Born June 20, 1912 in Gatchina . Mother died early, the boy was raised by his father. He studied at Leningrad State University , in 1933 he graduated with a degree in geobotany. Shlyakov worked in the Arkhangelsk Regional Land Administration, in 1938 went on an expedition to the Northern Urals . In the spring of 1941, Roman Nikolaevich became a junior researcher at the Botanical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences , and in July he was drafted into the army.
He participated in the Great Patriotic War as the commander of an anti-aircraft machine-gun platoon on the Volkhov and Leningrad fronts, and subsequently on the 1st and 4th Ukrainian fronts. He was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War , the Order of the Red Star and medals.
In 1947-1950 he studied at the BIN Postgraduate School, in 1950 he received a Ph.D. in biological sciences under the direction of Lidia Ivanovich Savich-Lyubitskaya . Over the next 35 years, Roman Nikolaevich worked at the Polar-Alpine Botanical Garden-Institute as a research fellow, and in 1960-1962, as a director. In 1973, Shlyakov defended his doctoral dissertation entitled “Liver mosses of the North of the USSR west of the Yenisei.”
RN Shlyakov studied the flora of mosses in the north of the USSR, prepared a five-volume monograph “Liver mosses of the North of the USSR”. He also processed several families of flowering plants for "Flora of the Murmansk region." After retiring in 1985, Roman Nikolaevich compiled sections of the books “Arctic Flora of the USSR” and “Flora of the European Part of the USSR,” describing the genera Yastrebinka and Yastrebinochka .
Roman Nikolayevich Shlyakov died on March 27, 1999 . He was buried at the Arbuzovo cemetery in the Kirov district of the Leningrad region.
