He made his debut as a journalist and theater reviewer in the magazine Gaetano Barbieri I Teatri . In 1827, he founded the satirical magazine La Vespa , two years later - the socio-political magazine Indicatore lombardo , at the head of which he gained a reputation as one of the most influential and popular Lombard journalists of a liberal direction. He continued to manage the magazine after its merger in 1838 with another publication - an updated magazine came out under the name Rivista europea . Due to economic difficulties in 1843, he transferred the leadership of the magazine into the hands of Gottardo Calvi . At the same time in 1842 he became the first editor of the Milanese music newspaper and headed it until 1846. In 1846-1853 led the Lombard Theater Company. In addition, together with Francesco Ambrosoli, Battaglia compiled a collection of biographical essays on outstanding contemporary figures “The Modern Gallery” ( Italian: Galleria contemporánea ; 1841).

In literature, Battaglia made his debut in the historical novels Lombard League ( Italian: La Lega Lombarda ; 1832) and Giovanna Provenza ( Italian: Giovanna di Provenza ; 1835, about Queen of Naples Giovanna I ). Then he published the manifesto “On the Current Situation of the Italian Drama Theater and on Measures to Improve It” ( Italian: Delle attuali condizioni del Teatro drammatico italiano in Italia e dei mezzi per promuoverne il perfezionamento ; 1838), after which he turned to drama, writing a number of historical plays: “Giovanna I of Naples” on the same plot ( Italian: Giovanna I di Napoli ; 1838), “Louise Strozzi” ( Italian. Luisa Strozzi ; 1839), “Filippo Maria Visconti” (about the last Duke of Milan of the Visconti dynasty, 1840) , The Foscari Family ( Italian: Famiglia Foscari ; 1844) and The Marquis Annibale Porrone ( Italian Marchese Annibale Porrone ; 1845, published 1859 ) The manner of the battle-playwright followed the tradition of Silvio Pellico .

The last part of Battaglia's life was devoted to work on the study “The History of Risorgimento ” ( Italian: Storia del Risorgimento italiano nelle vicende politiche d'Europa dagli anni 1848-49 al 1859 ); death interrupted this work on the third volume.

The son of Battaglia Giacomo Battaglia (1831-1859) showed promise as a literary critic, publishing in 1853 an anonymous article, “Roman in Italy” ( Italian: Del romanzo in Italia ), and then made his successful debut as a playwright with the historical drama “Gerolamo Olgato” ( Italian. Gerolamo Olgiato ; 1857, on the conspiracy and murder of the Duke of Galeazzo Maria Sforza ). After that, however, he entered the detachment of alpine hunters under the command of Giuseppe Garibaldi and died in the battle of San Fermo .
