History

When the kingdom of Qin conquered all other kingdoms, creating the first centralized empire in Chinese history, these lands became part of Beidi County (北 地 郡). Under the Western Han Empire, they became part of the Andean County (安定 郡). In the II century, these places were captured by the Huns, and for a long time passed under the power of nomads.

After the Chinese troops again conquered these places under the Northern Wei Empire, they became part of the Yuanzhou region (原 州). Under the Sui Empire, they became part of Pingliang County (平凉 郡). Under the Tang Empire, they were divided between the Xiaoguan (萧 关 县) county of Yuanzhou County and the Huining (会 宁县) county of Huizhou Province (会 州). In the XI century, these lands became part of the Tangut state of Xi Xia , and during the Sino-Tangut wars repeatedly passed from hand to hand. After the Tangut state was destroyed by the Mongols in the 13th century, many Muslims settled in these places, and the Khailadu fortress ((喇 都 堡) was built here.

Under the Ming Empire, Hailadu Fortress became the city of Xichang (海 城) of Guyuan Province (固原 州). After the founding of the Manchu Qing empire, these lands passed under the control of the Pinlyan government (平凉 府). Since 1747, the authorities of the Yanchai Commissariat (盐 茶 厅) were located in the Hailadu Fortress, and in 1874 the commissariat was upgraded to a county - this is how the Xichang (海 城县) county of Gansu Province appeared .

After the Xinhai revolution , administrative reform was carried out in China. Since it turned out that Fengtian Province already had a county with exactly the same name, in 1914, Xicheng County was renamed Haiyuan. In 1920, Haiyuan County became the epicenter of a devastating earthquake .

In 1950, the Pingliang Special Region (平凉 专区) was created, and the county became part of it. In 1953, the Siji, Haiyuan and Guyuan counties were merged into the Shihaigu Hui Autonomous Region (西海固 回族 自治区) of Gansu Province. In 1955, the Xihaigu Hui Autonomous Region was renamed the Guyuan Hui Autonomous Region (固原 回族 自治州) of Gansu Province. In 1958, the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was formed, and Guyuan Hui Autonomous Region became part of it as the Guyuan Special Region (固原 专区). In 1970, Guyuan Special District was renamed Guyuan County (固原 地区).

In 2002, Guyuan County was transformed into Guyuan City District.

By the Decree of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China dated December 31, 2003, Zhongwei City District was formed from Zhongwei, Zhongning and Haiyuan counties; Zhongwei County was transformed into the Shapotou District.
