Writing History
Schumann previously worked on several piano concerts: in 1828 he began one in E flat major , in 1829-31 he worked on the F major concert, and in 1839 he wrote one part of the concert in D minor . But not one of these works was completed.
In 1841, Schumann wrote fantasy for piano and orchestra. His wife, pianist Clara Schumann, invited him to expand this part to a full piano concert. In 1845, he added the intermezzo and finale to complete the work. All these three parts made up the piano concert.
The premiere took place on January 1, 1846 with the Gewandhaus Leipzig Orchestra under the direction of Ferdinand Hiller , to whom the work was dedicated, the soloist of the composer Clara Schumann was the soloist.
This concert is often compared to the equally famous piano concert of Edward Grieg , which is also written in A minor [2] . Grieg heard a Schumann concert in 1858. Both concerts begin with a powerful orchestral chord, followed by a descending piano part.
