Metsovon

Metsovon [3] [4] ( Greek Μέτσοβον [2] ή Μέτσοβο , arum. Aminciu ) is a small town in Greece . The city is located at an altitude of 1160 meters above sea level [1] , in the highlands of Pind , west of the Meteora region and 31 kilometers north-east of Ioannina , 178 kilometers south-west of Thessaloniki and 297 kilometers north- west of Athens . The administrative center of the community of the same name (Dima) in the peripheral unit of Ioannina in the periphery of Epirus . The population of 2,003 is the 2011 census [2] . Area 101.908 square kilometers [1] .

History

Since the 15th century, the Metsovon region was under Ottoman rule and was part of the Sanjak of Ioannina [5] [6] . At the end of the period of Ottoman rule, the Greek and Arumian population of the region was subjected to frequent raids by Albanians [7] . During the First Balkan War, the city ​​was burned [8] .

Attractions

The city is famous for its cheeses - Metsovone and Metsovela ( μετσοβέλα ), as well as wine production. In Metsovon, there is the Katogi winery ( Κατώγι Αβέρωφ ), owned by the Averoff family. Averof Gallery is located in the city, dedicated to Georgios Averoff . Metsovon is a popular winter tourism center. 2 kilometers from Metsovon is the ski center of the Baron Mikhail Tositsas Foundation ( Χιονοδρομικό Κέντρο Ιδρύματος Βαρώνου Μιχαήλ Τοσίτσα ), five kilometers away is the ski center Profitis Ilias (Prophet Elijah, Χιονοδρομικό ΚέντρίΠ The Anilion ski center is being built ( Χιονοδρομικό Κέντρο Ανηλίου Μετσόβου ) [9] . In 1980, the Anilion tunnel ( Σήραγγα Ανήλιου ) was built in the Metsovona region, 2100 meters long [10] , the longest in Greece at that time, which reduced the communication time between the eastern and western parts of Greece and avoided the increased load on winding mountain roads region, which in winter is often inaccessible due to heavy snowfalls.
