Title
Since ancient times, the city was called Mithimna . However, at the end of the Byzantine period the settlement is called Molyvos . The name Mithymn is given to the settlement in honor of the daughter of Makarey and his wife. Both names are currently used. The first name, Mithimna, presumably has proto-Hellenistic roots and their Pelasgus language occurs. It was used until 1354 . Historical sources, such as coins and inscriptions, say that the name originally sounded like Matimn ( Greek θυμνα ), but in the Hellenistic period the name takes on a modern form - Mithimna ( Greek θυμνα ). Beginning in 1355, when the island of the Gateluzos dynasty ruled the island, the name of Molyvos was fixed. Presumably, the name comes from the French Mont d'olives . On the map of Lesbos in 1782 , developed by the Frenchman S. Gufye, the settlement is indicated by two names - Mithimna and Molyvos. In 1912, after the return of Lesbos to Greece , its ancient name returned to the settlement. Nevertheless, now among the inhabitants is often mentioned the name Molyvos.
