Biography
The youngest son of Casimir V (c. 1381 - 1434 ), Duke of Pomerania-Stettin ( 1413 - 1434 ), and Catherine of Brunswick (died 1429 ).
After the death of his father in 1434, Joachim the Younger inherited the Szczecin Duchy. At the time of entry into the ducal throne, he was a minor. Initially, the city was governed by the Duchy of Szczecin and chivalry . In 1443, on the initiative of the Duke, new statutes were developed and adopted for the merchants in Stettin . The main principle of the charters was that the grain trade should be under the control of the Szczecin merchants and should be carried out in the territory of this city. This caused numerous protests by the guild of merchant cities, including Stargard , which from the XIV century competed in the trade of agricultural products for szczecin merchants.
In 1445 - 1446, during the war of the Brandenburg Electoralism with the Duchy of Volgast , Joachim Szczecin, who was a neutral observer in this conflict, lost two cities that were formally part of his duchy. In 1448, Joachim Jr. began the war with Brandenburg because of these captured cities. The military conflict ended in a compromise, but the Duke of Szczecin was unable to recover the lost cities.
He died from a plague epidemic on October 4, 1451 . He was buried next to his father in the castle church of St. Otto in Stettin .
Family
On September 29, 1440, Joachim the Younger married Elizabeth ( 1425-1465 ), the daughter of Margrave Johann Alchemist of Brandenburg-Kulmbachsky (1406-1464) and Barbara of Saxe-Wittenberg (1405-1465). The couple had an only son:
- Otto III ( May 29, 1444 - September 7 or 8, 1464 ), Duke of Pomerania- Szczecin (1451-1464), the last representative of the Szczecin lineage of the Gryphic dynasty.
After the death of her husband Joachim the Younger, Elizaveta of Bradenburg for the second time in 1454 married Duke Wartislav X (c. 1435-1478), Duke of Rugen, Bartsky and Wolgast.
