Biography
Richard Orsini was the second son of Matthew II Orsini , but he succeeded his father in 1258.
When the brother of Emperor Michael VIII Paleologue, John launched a war against the ruler of Epirus, Michael II of Comnenus , Ricardo, along with other vassals of Prince Achey Wilhelm II de Villardoin , entered into an alliance with the ruler of Epirus and moved his troops to his aid. In the battle of Pelagonia in 1259, Despot Michael II Komnenos was defeated by the Byzantines and many noble feudal lords, including Wilhelm II de Villarduin, were captured [1] .
In 1261, Richard was summoned by the Pope together with other feudal lords in order to assist the Latin emperor Balduin II [2] . But they did not have time to do it, because Constantinople was soon captured by the Byzantines, and Balduin fled.
After Matthew II Orsini died in 1264, Richard I became the county palatinate of Kefalonia and Zakynthos.
After the death of Wilhelm II de Villarduen, the principality of Achaia fell under the tutelage of the Neapolitan kingdom, along with all the vassals, one of whom was Ricardo. Therefore, in 1286-1290, he served as admiral of the Neapolitan fleet and patrolled the coast of Albania [3] .
In 1291-1292, Ricardo I, headed by a detachment of 100 soldiers, went to help the ruler of Epirus, Nikifor I, the Comnenus Duque , who fought against the Byzantines besieging Yannin . The daughter of the Epirus ruler, Maria Comnina, was sent to Kefalonia as a hostage to provide assistance to Ricardo I. After the Byzantines were driven back, she married the son and heir of Richard, John I. Orsini . This caused the resentment of Nicephorus, since the wedding took place without his permission and knowledge [4] . Richard I also arranged in 1305 the wedding of the heiress of the Achaean throne Matilda Eno and the Duke of Athens Guy II de La Rocha [5] .
Richard I Orsini was killed in the city of Glarentz (a medieval city whose ruins are not far from modern Kyllini) in 1304 after a dispute with one of his knights named Leon [1] .
Family
Richard was married twice, his first wife is unknown, and his second wife was Margarita Villarduen , sister of Princess Elizabeth . From the first marriage, Richard had four children: a son, John I Orsini, and three daughters [4] .
