On December 11, 2013, members of the Al-Nusra Front and the Islamic Front managed to break into the industrial zone of the city of Adra, located 40 kilometers northeast of the Syrian capital Damascus . Having entered the city, the militants began to kill the Alawites, Druze, Shiites and Christians living there [1] . The killings continued the next day [1] .

On December 13, government troops surrounded the city and launched an operation against the militants there. According to December 15, as a result of the massacre that took place on December 11-12, 32 to 40 civilians died, dozens of people were reported as missing [3] . According to representatives of the army of the Syrian government, the death toll is more than 80 people [4] . The Syrian Foreign Minister said that the death toll from the massacre exceeds 100 people [5] .

As of December 30, the Syrian government evacuated from the city about 5 thousand people [6] . As of December 31, the number of evacuated amounted to more than 6 thousand [7] .

By mid-January, the Syrian government managed to free the industrial zone from militants [8] . By the end of September 2014 - to establish full control over the city [9] .
