Biography
Matthew II came from the Italian clan Orsini , who ruled in the counties of Kefalonia and Zakynthos from 1195 [1] . Matthew II reigned from 1238 to 1264 . The exact origin of Matthew II is not known, most likely, he was the son of the Palatine Count of Kefalonia and Zakynthos Matthew I Orsini . In 1228, Matthew II married the Byzantine Princess Anne (Theodore) Angelina, probably the daughter of Michael I Comnenus Ducas , despot Epirus . In 1238 , after Matthew I died, Matthew II ascended the throne and became the third Palatine of Kefalonia and Zakynthos. Like his predecessors, he was a vassal of the neighboring states of the Kingdom of Sicily , Epirus despotate and Achaea . Not later than in 1264, Matthew II died, and his son Ricardo I Orsini became his successor.
