Biography

Born in Miami , his parents were from the Bahamas . He spent his childhood on the island of Cat and in Nassau , he again fell into the United States at the age of 15. Despite a strong Bahamian accent, Poitiers gained fame as America's best black actor, playing in productions such as Porgy and Bess .

This was followed by films in which he played along with white actors (for example, “ Without Bowing Their Heads ” with Tony Curtis , 1959).

During the struggle of blacks for their rights, Poitiers became the first black actor whose fees were not inferior to the earnings of whites ( Teacher with Love , 1967).

In the late 1960s, Poitiers took part in several famous films on topics of racial hatred and prejudice (" Guess who's coming for dinner? ", " Stifling Southern Night "). In the last film, Poitiers played one of his most successful characters, Virgil Tibbs, a detective from Philadelphia. Later on, two sequels , My Name Is Mr. Tibbs (1970) and Organization (1971), were released for the film.

In the 1970s, he was mainly engaged in directing. In 1973, he had a daughter, Sidney Tamia Poitier , known for her role in the film K. Tarantino's " Proof of Death ."

In 1976, he married a Canadian actress with Lithuanian-Jewish roots, Joanna Shimkus , known for her role as Letizia Weiss in the movie " Adventurers " by Robert Enrico . After marriage, the actress left the cinema [1] .

Diplomatic career

In April 1997, Poitiers was appointed Ambassador of the Bahamas to Japan and held this post until 2007 . He is also the Permanent Representative of the Bahamas to UNESCO .
