History
When the Tang Empire in 677, the old administrative center of Huiyuan County (怀远 县) was washed away by floods, and a new settlement was founded in 678 in these places. In 1020, Tangut leader Li Deming transferred his stake from Linzhou here and renamed Huiyuan to Xingzhou (兴 州). In 1038, his son, Li Yuanhao, proclaimed himself the emperor of the independent state, Xi Xia , and renamed Xingzhou to Xinqing (兴庆 府).
Under the Ming empire, Ningxia ((镇) was founded here. Under the Qing Empire, the authorities of the Ninsya Council (宁夏 府) were located in these places.
In 1929, the Kuomintang authorities created the province of Ningxia, and the settlement of Ningxia became the provincial city of Ningxia (宁夏 省城). In 1944, it was renamed Yinchuan (银川).
In 1949, the old Yinchuan was administratively divided into four districts, and on the lands transferred to it from the jurisdiction of the surrounding counties, in 1951, districts No. 5 and No. 6 were formed. In 1954, these six districts were combined in pairs. In 1970, they were officially renamed the Urban District (城), the New Town District (区 城), and the Prigorodny District (郊区).
By the resolution of the State Council of China on October 19, 2002, three Yinchuan districts were disbanded, and the Jinfeng district was created on the site of a part of the land of the former New Town district.
