Biography
Came from the city of Troyes. Her father, shortly after her birth, was accused of bigamy and forced to return to her first wife, while her mother sent the child to a shelter at the monastery, where she was to become a nun. Marie Jeanne, however, in 1728 (at the age of 14) refused to be tonsured and returned to her mother, whose relationship with her was extremely difficult.
Carried away by the actor Antonio Riccoboni (the son of the actor and playwright Ludovico Riccoboni), she married him on July 7, 1734 and entered the stage (her debut took place on August 23 of the same 1734), although she did not possess serious stage talent. Abandoned by her husband, she left the theater in 1761. When her first works appeared, L'histoire du marquis de Cressy (1758) and Les lettres de Julie Catesby (1759), Palisso in the Dunsiad denied that they belonged to women.
Other works: “Les lettres de miss Fanny Butter”, “Ernestine”, “Amélie” (remake of the famous novel by Fielding), continued “Marianne” by Marivo, “Histoire de miss Jenny Level” (1764), “Lettres d'Adélaide de Dammartin à Mr le Comte de Rancé ”(1766),“ Lettres d'Elisabeth-Sophie de Vallière à Louise Hortense de Canteleu ”(1772),“ Lettres de milord Rivers à sir Charles Cardignan ”(1777),“ Recueil de pièces et d 'histoires "(1783). Lagarpe repeatedly praised "the subtlety and grace of the pictures drawn by the writer, her mind, the grace and accuracy of her syllable." Despite the literary fame of Riccoboni and her proximity to such famous writers as Didero and Grimm, the financial situation of the writer was precarious, and in the revolutionary era, when she lost her pension assigned to her from the yard, even disastrous. She died in the arms of her friend Teresa, who bequeathed her small property.
It is considered an imitator of Richardson's "epistolary novels." According to the ESBE, on a modern (dictionary entry time) reader, “Riccoboni’s works, not devoid of amusement, make an unpleasant impression due to a lack of simplicity and abuse of exclamations, epithets, exaggerations.” The best edition is Oeuvres complètes (1786, 1818 and 1826) [4] .
