Biography
Ferruccio Novo became known to the public in 1939 when he was appointed as the successor to Giovanni Battista Kuniberti as president of the Torino football club [1] . During his 14-year presidency at Torino, he created a strong and almost invincible team that has achieved great success, it is known as the “Grande Torino” [2] . One of the key players was midfielder Romeo Menti , whom Novo invited from Fiorentina in 1941. He also played a significant role in the signing of defender Aldo Ballarin , midfielder Ezio Loic and striker Valentino Mazzola .
In 1943-1949, this team won the Italian Football Championship five times in a row. In 1949, almost the entire composition of this team died in a plane crash that went down in history as a tragedy in Superga .
On February 27, 1949, Novo led the Italian national team, which he was preparing for the 1950 World Cup. [3] The team automatically qualified for the tournament as a reigning champion. He called in goalkeeper Lucidio Sentimenti , defender Osvaldo Fattori , midfielders Carlo Annovazzi and Carlo Parola and striker Giampiero Boniperti .
The tournament was unsuccessful for Italy, the first match against Sweden ended in defeat with a score of 3: 2. The victory over Paraguay did not bring the next round, despite the fact that the Swedes played a draw with Paraguay. After the end of the tournament Novo left the post of coach.
