Nitrogen balance

Nitrogen balance ( Nitrogen equilibrium , Engl. Nitrogen balance ) - the correspondence between the amount of nitrogen absorbed by the body and allocated from it. Such compliance is necessary for the sustainable development of humans and animals . For example, an adult human body should consume 13-16 g of nitrogen per day, that is, 100 g of protein [1] . If for a long time the body receives an amount of nitrogen less than the so-called protein minimum , then it begins to destroy its own proteins. Nitrogen balance becomes negative (the body releases more nitrogen than it consumes) [2] . This leads to the fact that a person loses weight, weakens, decreases in mass ( exhaustion occurs). For a growing human body, the amount of nitrogen coming from food should be greater than the amount of nitrogen contained in the residues of substances emitted by it [1] .

The amount of protein destroyed in the body can be calculated by determining the amount of nitrogen in the urine by the Kjeldahl method and multiplying it by 6.25, since the protein contains 16% nitrogen (16 × 6.25 = 100). The amount of undigested food protein is determined by the nitrogen content in the feces [3] .
