History
The existing red brick church was built instead of wooden in 1701 - 1708 . It is believed that the builders were the merchant family of Bobkovs. [one]
The church is a real gem of Russian architecture due to its special patterns and majestic silhouette. The decor is made of brick and white stone in the spirit of Moscow 17th century Posad churches. The church was decorated on the outside with “tiles” - tiles with floral ornaments. The bell tower with an eclectic decor was added after the old one leaned in 1871. The construction, which was started in 1872, continued after 1878. The new bell tower was built a short distance from the refectory, and an archway appeared between them. The church had 8 bells . [2]
Inside the walls of the temple were decorated with murals; fragments of them have reached the present time in very poor condition. The carved gilded three-tier iconostasis was a real work of art.
A particularly revered shrine of the church was the icon of the Kazan Mother of God . Under the Red Mountain, the merchant Kachanov built a stone chapel that did not survive to this day. Since 1883, a parish school worked. [3]
In 1929, by the decision of the Plenum of the City Council, they intended to give the church building to an anti-religious museum. In 1930 the temple was closed and used as a tar warehouse. In the 1955 and 1960s. A partial restoration was carried out, during which elements of white-stone decoration were dismantled. [4] The bell tower has lost completion. The museum, which was supposed to be transferred to the church in 1960, was never opened.
In 2002, the church was handed over to the parish, and services were resumed. Work was begun to restore the building: the cracks in the foundation and walls were repaired, the basement of the main altar was cleaned, concrete floors were made, and the arch was restored. The base of the church has been cleared of rubble formed over the past decades. The restoration of tiled decoration (including colorful "tiles" on the exterior walls) began. The work is carried out by parishioners under the guidance of experienced restorers. In 2004, churches donated bells cast in Voronezh . [5]
Since 2004, the tradition was renewed to make a procession on Holy Trinity Day to the Trinity Optin Monastery . [3]
A new round in the restoration took place in 2006 with the participation of Vladimir Sobolev, a native and honorary citizen of the city of Bolkhov , who at that time was the director of the Orelstroy OJSC, the largest construction company in the Oryol Region . [6]
On July 9, 2009, a charity event was organized in the Oryol-Libyan diocese and the Government of the Oryol Region to raise funds for the restoration of the church. On the same day crosses were installed on the dome of the church.
On November 1, 2013, the Archbishop of Oryol and Livensky, Anthony, headed the rite of consecration of the church. [7]
By the beginning of 2014, the facade of the temple was restored almost completely. The inner surface of the church is painted by the Oryol icon painters Mikhail and Olga Nikitin, and the icons are made by craftsmen from Moscow, St. Petersburg and Vladimir. [5]
