Biography
Philip Erasmus Reich was born into a family of a doctor and a pharmacist. From 1732 to 1744 he was a student at the Weidemann bookseller in Frankfurt . Having successfully completed his apprenticeship, in 1744 he moved permanently to Leipzig, becoming an employee of the local branch of the company, and in 1762 he became a companion of the Weidemann company, called Weidmanns Erben u. Reich. In 1764 he founded the Leipzig Book Fair , which replaced Frankfurt, in 1765 he founded a new union of booksellers at the Leipzig Easter Fair and led it.
He undertook publications of both German and foreign (primarily) British writers. It is considered the main reformer of German book trade in the 18th century: in 1760, it introduced the so-called net payment method (according to which all payments to publishers should be paid in cash only), spoke out in print (anonymously) against reprints and in favor of recognition of authorship of literary property At the same time, since 1774, he actively fought against illegal publishing houses.
