Mythology
He was portrayed as a young man with a red face and fiery hair, most often in a sitting pose, with a solar disk or half-disk behind him. To maintain strength and youth, Tonatiu must receive the blood of the victims every day, otherwise he may die while traveling at night in the underworld. Therefore, every day his journey to the zenith was accompanied by souls (see soul-blood) of the sacrificed and soldiers who fell in battle.
According to the Aztecs, the universe survived several eras, during which the sun were various gods. In the current, fifth, era, he became Tonatiu under the calendar name Naui Olin (“four movements”).
Among the Aztec myths about the origin of the sun, the following is most common. After the creation of the world, the gods gathered to decide which of them would become the god of the Sun. They made a fire where the chosen one was to throw; but everyone was afraid of the terrible heat. Finally, Nanahuatl ("strewn with buboes"), suffering from a terrible disease, rushed into the flames, where "he began to crackle like meat roasting on coals." He was followed by Tekkistekatl ("Located in the sea shell"), three times trying to jump into the fire before Nanahuatl, but retreating from the unbearable heat. Nanahuatl became the Sun, Tekkistekatl - the Moon - the god of Metzli . At first, the Moon shone as brightly as the Sun, until one of the gods annoyed by this threw a rabbit at it. Since then, Metzli has been depicted as a black disk or a vessel of water on which a rabbit is (located). Tonatiu is the patron saint of the Eagle Warrior alliance , its symbol is the eagle.
