Chokor, Franz Theodor

Franz Theodor Csokor ( German: Franz Theodor Csokor , September 6, 1885 - January 6, 1969) - Austrian writer, novelist and translator, Austria’s largest playwright of the 20th century.

Biography

Born in Vienna in the family of a doctor. He made his debut in literature in 1910, printing at his own expense the drama “Lorenzino”. In his early work, the influence of Strindberg , Vedekind, Werfel is noticeable . In 1913, Chokor trained for six months as an assistant director at the Komissarzhevskaya Theater . At this time, he met with Nikolai Evreinov . In 1920 he translated his comedy "The wings of the soul." In 1926, based on the drama of Buchner, he wrote the play “Wozzeck”.

The success of Chokor brought the play about the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire "November 3, 1918" (1936). In 1938, he received .

In 1938-1946 he was in antifascist emigration, lived in Poland, with the beginning of the bombing of Warsaw in 1939, fled to Romania, then through Yugoslavia to Italy. After the war he returned to Austria. In 1947 he became president of the Austrian branch of the PEN Club .

Based on the material of ancient history and mythology, he created the plays Calypso (1944), Pilate (1946) and Caesar's Widow (1953), which composed the trilogy Olympus and Calvary. In 1955 he wrote the novel "Keys to the Abyss", in the same year he became a laureate in Literature.

In 1959 he wrote the play "With the Flow", dedicated to the Austrian artist Alfred Kubin . His last plays were "Caesar of Inter-Time" (1965) and "Alexander" (1969).

One of the friends of the playwright was the sculptor Ivan Meshtrovich .
