Scheel, Mildred

Mildred Scheel ( German: Mildred Scheel , nee Mildred Wirtz ; December 31, 1932 , Cologne - May 13, 1985 , Cologne ) - German doctor, founder of the German Cancer Foundation . As the wife of the Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Walter Scheel, she carried out great social and public work, becoming one of the most famous German women of the post-war period and earned worldwide recognition of her merits.

Biography

Mildred Scheel is the third child in the family of a radiologist and his American wife. As a child, Mildred became interested in medicine and often went to her father’s office. In 1944, the Virtsev family left the destroyed Cologne and settled in Amberg .

Having received a matriculation certificate in 1950, Mildred studied medicine at the University of Munich , in Innsbruck and Regensburg , passed the state exam in Munich and received the position of medical assistant in radiology . Subsequently, she worked in several hospitals. In 1963, Mildred had a daughter, Cornelia .

In 1967, at work in a sanatorium, Mildred met her future husband, a politician from the Free Democratic Party, Walter Scheel . Sheel in the sanatorium was recovering from kidney surgery. Mildred Wirtz and Walter Scheel married on July 18, 1969 in Munich and soon moved to Bonn, where Scheel was appointed German Foreign Minister in October of that year. The spouses Sheel had a common daughter, they also adopted a child from Bolivia .

After the election of Walter Scheel as Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany on May 15, 1974, a new phase of life began for Mildred Scheel, full of responsibilities in public life. In accordance with the traditions laid down by Ellie Hoys-Knapp and Wilhelmina Lübke , Dr. Mildred Scheel set herself the tasks in the field of social welfare and health policy - the fight against cancer . On September 25, 1974, Mildred Scheel founded the German Cancer Relief Fund and was very enthusiastic about raising funds even during state visits. Mildred Scheel broke the taboo and began to speak openly and freely about cancer in general and cancer of the uterus and prostate gland in particular. She also managed to quickly win over the medical community. Mildred Scheel organized the first scientific congresses of doctors with the participation of experts in the field of cancer treatment from Europe, the USA and Asia.

Ten years after the founding of the German Cancer Relief Fund, she was diagnosed with the disease herself, and Mildred Scheel died of cancer in 1985. The grave of Mildred Scheel is located in the Old Cemetery in Bonn.
