History
In 2004, a project of an armored sanitary-evacuation vehicle based on the BMP-1 [3] was developed at the Zhytomyr Mechanical Repair Plant, known as the Medic BMP. In the same year, one demonstration prototype was made, which was aimed at testing [2] . August 10, 2007 the design of the armored car was patented [1] .
During the tests, design flaws were revealed: double hatches in the stern (left from the BMP-1) did not prevent the placement of lightly wounded, but they significantly complicated the loading and unloading of seriously wounded, incapable of independent movement, as well as the wounded who were on a stretcher [2] .
In the following years, the machine (received a new name -EMS ) took part in several exhibitions of weapons and military equipment, but was not accepted for service [2] .
In 2014, the plant sold the car to volunteers for 1.2 million hryvnias and on August 30, 2014 it entered service with the Marine Corps brigade of the Ukrainian Navy [2] .
In 2016, the armored vehicle was included in the Ukroboronprom Group of Companies product catalog and offered for export (under the name CEV ) [4] .

The EMS is designed to provide first aid and transportation of the wounded (including seriously injured) from hard-to-reach areas, accident zones, natural disasters and military operations [2] .
In comparison with the BMP-1, the internal volume of the vehicle’s body has been significantly increased (due to the increase in the height of the airborne squad), the turret and weapons have been dismantled [2] .
To increase the ride, additional shock absorbers were installed on the armored car [2] .
Also on the armored car was installed air conditioning [2] .
The crew of the armored car - 3 people (driver, doctor and nurse).
In addition, the SAM can take from 4 to 6 wounded (6 lightly wounded in a sitting position or four lying “heavy” wounded) [2] [5] .
Operator countries
- Ukraine :
