The "5" Royales ( Five Royals ) - American male vocal group, working in the styles of rhythm and blues , soul and do-woop . As the name of the group suggests, it consisted of five people.
Their commercial success was quite modest - in the 1950s, seven songs of the group reached the Billboard rhythm and blues chart , most of which were recorded from the second half of 1952 to the second half of 1953. According to the music site AllMusic , the group, although it was relatively unnoticed, with its combination of do-woop , jump blues and gospel styles , became an important link between early rhythm and blues and early soul [1] .
The site of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , where the group was included in 2015 (in the “Early Influences” category) [2] , credits 5 Royales with the creation of “some of the first rock and roll standards” (that is, classic rock n roll songs; songs often recorded and performed by rock and roll artists) [3] .
According to R.J. Smith, author of the biography of James Brown, “5 Royales was the first of the great vocal groups to bring gospel vocal harmonies to the pop music market” [4] .
The song “Think” performed by The “5” Royales is on the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll [5] list compiled by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame .
