Player Career

Willie Desjardin begins his career as a hockey player in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League for the Moose Jeu Canucks hockey club and plays there from 1971 to 1974. And in the 1974/75 season, he plays for Moose Jayu Canucks and Swift Current Broncos. From 1975 to 1977, he plays for the Letbride Broncos in the Western Hockey League [1] . He later plays for the Saskatchewan Huskies at the University of Saskatchewan under the direction of Dave King . King recommends him to Alex Angelica, the head coach of the Wiesss Nijmegen club from the Netherlands Hockey League . There Willie becomes captain and in the very first year wins the title of champion of the Netherlands with the team [2] .

Career Coach

Willie Desjardin began his career as a coach in the University of Calgary in 1985 as an assistant coach and became the head coach in 1989 when he coached the Seibears in Japan. He then returned to Canada and became the head coach of Saskatoon Blades in the middle of the 1997/98 season. Then he was invited to work as an assistant to the head coach of the Canadian team .

Then Medicine Hat Tigers hires Desjardin as head coach. Desjardin with the tigers won the title of the champion of the Western Hockey League twice, and in the 2005/06 season also becomes the general manager of Medicine Hut Tigers . That same season, after the Medicine Hut Tigers lost in the third round of the Western Hockey League playoffs, Desjardin won the Dunk McCallum Memorial Trophy, a prize awarded annually to the best coach of the Western Hockey League .

In 2009, Willie, as an assistant head coach, won the youth world championship with the Canadian youth team . Then the head coach was Pat Quinn , and his assistants, like Willie Dejardin, were Guy Boucher and Dave Cameron [3] .

From 2010 to 2012, Desjardin was an assistant to the head coach of the Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League , then he worked as the head coach of the farm club Starz in the AHL - Texas Stars [4] . On June 17, 2014, he led his team to their first Calder Cup .

June 23, 2014 Dejaren becomes the head coach of the NHL - Vancouver Canucks . Willie replaced in this position, John Tortorella , who was dismissed from his post as head coach after one season.

The regular season of the 2014/15 season , the Canucks, led by Desjardins, finished 2nd in their division, making it into the playoffs where they lost to the Calgary Flames in the first round in six games.
