Biography
Representative of the Grifich dynasty. The eldest son of Vartislav VI (One-eyed) (1346-1394), the Duke of Volgast , Rugen and Bart, and Anna of Mecklenburg-Stargard.
In June 1394, after the death of his father, Vartislav VI, Barnim VI began to rule the duchy of Volgastia . His policy, in particular, was directed against his own cities, with which the duke was often in a contentious relationship. Barnim Volgastsky provided frequent military assistance to his cousin Eric Pomeranian , king of Sweden, Denmark and Norway.
By agreement between the city council and the philistines who concluded the conflict, the Duke Barnim Volgastsky, together with Margarita , Queen of Denmark, Sweden and Norway, fought against the Hanseatic League , which opposed piracy on the Baltic Sea. According to modern scholars, the duke Barnim Volgast was even the leader of the Vitali brothers . In 1398, the Duke of Barnim was obliged to send his ships from Lubeck to combat piracy in the Baltic Sea . During one of the expeditions, the duke was captured and returned to land, after which he did not engage in robberies at sea.
In 1402, the Duke of Barnim of Wolgastia, with an army of 2,400, opposed the city of Lubeck . At first, the duke ravaged and plundered the urban surroundings. In the decisive battle, the Duke of Barnim was defeated by the townspeople, receiving severe wounds. According to modern researchers, many knights died in the battle, while the rest fled.
He died in 1405 during the plague.
Family and Children
Barnim VI was married to Veronica, possibly the daughter of Frederick V, burggraph of Nuremberg (1333–1398), and Elizabeth Meissen (1329–1375). The couple had two or three children:
- Vartislav IX (c. 1395 - April 17, 1457) - Duke of Volgast and Pomeranian
- Barnim VII (Senior) (1403 - August 24, 1449/29 August 1450) - Duke of Volgast
- Elizabeth (?) ( C. 1405-1473), an abbess in Krummin and Bergen am Ruegen .
